CARP CATALOGUE DOWNLOAD
Chub have recently launched their new carp fishing catalogue and the good news is that it's available to download. This is particularly handy for those of you not in the UK, as I'm told that getting your hands on carp fishing catalogues isn't that easy in some countries. Even if you're not buying anything right now, it's handy to know what tackle is out there. Chub, part of the Hardy & Greys family of fishing tackle companies, are an innovative company that are making great strides with their tackle range. You can read more about this catalogue by clicking the link below:
Most of you, I hope all, will be in possesion of an unhooking mat. Lollysticks. Aquagel and Aquaswab - available from most good Koi dealers Paper towels, not kitchen roll. The best is the concertina type, commonly found in public toilets, available from most janitorial or cleaning suppliers. Medical Inspection Gloves - Latex type available from most good chemist's, buy by the box.
Place the fish on an unhooking mat and visually inspect the fish, try to be quick but efficient. Start with the mouth,(hookholds) then the body flanks (open sores, spawning marks etc), fin and fin roots and then the tail (both for parasites). Do each side in turn, being firm but gentle. With a little practice this should take no longer than a few seconds. Always wear latex gloves when treating the fish, you can never be 100% sure when handling fish that you will not pass on a viable infectious agent from your hands to the fish. Lake/River water should be kept close by in a clean container to keep the fish damp at all times. All equipment should be ready to hand before any inspection or treatment occurs.
Types of damage.
In all cases of minor damage the wound must be dried first. There is no point in putting treatments on to wet wounds as the mucus will stop the treatment reaching the wound. Use the paper towels to carefully dry any hookholds and tears. Place a finger at the bottom of the wound and apply a small amount of Aquaswab rubbing gently into the wound. Return the fish carefully to the water. ( always hold the fish upright in the water and wait for it to move off on its own accord).
Open Sores, Spawning damage
Again dry the wounds carefully with the paper towels. Try to soft dab the wounds, not rasp away at them. Apply Aquagel to the wound and gently rub well into the damaged areas. At this point the fish will feel the treatment and may try to jump, be ready for this. You will feel the fish stiffening prior to any movement. Return carefully to the water as above.
Species such as Argulus, the fish louse and Geometra piscicola, the fish leech are highly visible and in small numbers offer no threat to the fish. However in larger numbers they can be a major irritation and should be removed. The easiest way is to use a lollystick and carefully prise them of the body/fins/tail. Afterwards, if there is any sign of a recent blood meal, treat as per hookholds. Return carefully to the water as above.
Word of warning
Never use a sack/sling and run it the length of the fish to 'clean it'. I have seen this so many times to remove all manner of objects from parasites to leaves. You are removing large amounts of mucus by doing so. Use lake/river water and gently run it over the fish to clean it. Never touch the gill filaments, if you suspect a problem with the gills have someone who knows what to look for and how to inspect the gills do so. When treating any damage around the operculumn ( gill plate) apply gentle pressure to the gill plate to keep it closed. Never let any treatments touch the gills. If in doubt leave well alone around the gills. Wherever possible have a friend or fellow angler keep the fish still whilst you carry out inpections and treatments. Again with little practice the whole precedure should take no longer than 1 - 2 minutes. Both the Aqua products leave a sealing residue on the fish and will seal any wounds from further infection.
I would like to say I have no tie up with any
of the above products. As a fishery
manager/consultant I have been using these for a
numbers of years and consider them by far the
best for the jobs above. Good luck if you want
to have ago at helping the fish, but if in doubt
leave it alone and return them staright to the
water, making sure it swims away in the correct

Hello Angling News It is getting close to the best time of the year to fish for the Mighty Mahseer in India and Indian Beat would like to announce its dates
for Mahseer Angling tours. The Mahseer found in the rivers of Southern India grows to size of over 100 lbs, is the largest and hardest
fighting game fish in India. Pound for pound it is said to give a better fight than the Salmon. There is also the opportunity to fish for other
carp species such as Pink Carp, Carnatic Carp, Rohu, Grass and Common Carp. The fishing camps on the fast flowing Cauvery river,
coupled with pristine forest, wildlife, colorful people and cultures make this a once in a lifetime adventure.
